The Faculties of Criminology and Forensic Science of NICFS are constantly engaged in carrying out research work in their respective fields.A number of research projects/studies have been completed by these Faculties, the reports of which have already been published.

Recently, NICFS has completed a Research Project on the "Rights of Women Prisoners in Indian Jails". This was sponsored by the National Human Rights Commission. Another Research Project on "Shortage of Manpower in different FSLs in India: Causes & Solution", sponsored by the BPR&D, undertaken by the Criminology Faculty is also nearing completion.

Compilation of data relating to research project on "Techniques for detection of forgery in bank credit cards" undertaken by the Documents Division of Forensic Science faculty is in progress.

Research Guidance

The NICFS is a recognised centre for doctoral research in the fields of Criminology and Forensic Science. So far, 14 Scholars have done their research work under the Faculty of Criminology and 5 Scholars under the Faculty of Forensic Science for their thesis to Ph.D Degree.

Two Research scholars have submitted their thesis to Ph.D Degree to Dr.Hari Singh Gour University, Sagar and Sambalpur University, Orissa on the subjects "Domestic Violence : A Sociological perspective" and "Women Policing : A comparative study of New Delhi & Orissa" respectively.

Currently two Scholars have been given Research Fellowship for pursuing their Ph.D work on subjects "The perception of the Criminal Justice Personnel towards the treatment of an offender" and "Genetic basis (concept of Heredity & Variation) of Criminal Behaviour and its application in checking and correction of criminal (Anti-social/overt) behaviour".

  1. Attitudes of Adolescents towards PoliceThe research work represents a modest effort to study scientifically adolescents attitude towards police. The study shows a good deal of unanimity that the police would hardly be able to accomplish unless they are backed up by public goodwill and cooperation.
  2. Delay in the Disposal of Criminal Cases in the Sessions and Lower Courts in Delhi - Asia Crime Prevention Foundation, Tokyo, JapanIn order to get at the formal and informal possibilities of delay in the disposal of cases,the study has looked into court organisation and procedure. Based on the empirical data,a ‘court calendar’ has been advised for prescribing time limits.
  3. Victims of HomicideThe study in concerned with the victims of homicide, their role in the offence, the problems faced by their next of kins and measures of relief and assistance available to them in a more humane and effective manner.
  4. Victims of Fatal Motor - Vehicle AccidentsThe research study looks into the background of victims of fatal motor vehicle accidents n Delhi with a view to ascertaining the socioeconomic condition of the bereaved depends as well as their compensation needs and recommends for an integrated traffic policy.
  5. Impact of Computerization on Crime Control in IndiaThe efficiency & effectiveness of police operations require that the police officer should be linked directly with the available database and the police department should have easy access to the computer centres for early securing of required information.
  6. A Study on Children of Women Prisoners in Indian JailsThe study has discussed in details, the involvement of large number of women in crimes due to massive industrialization, westernisations and urbanization who invariably accompanied with their children and thus devoid of normal environment and development.
  7. Shortage of Manpower in CFSLs/FSLs - Cause and SolutionsThe study shows the shortage of manpower as one of the important reasons for the delay in processing the cases in the forensic science laboratories. Some useful suggestions and recommendations were also made based on the study.
  8. Grievances of the Police - A Socio-Phychological AnalysisAfter independence, the people looked upon the police to perform a much wider duties in addition to the traditional role. The study has discussed that the police as a body of citizens have their own grievances, disabilities, dilemmas and demands.
